synopsis

(cr. Goodreads)

Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price”.

my-review

overview

It Ends With Us is the first Colleen Hoover book I’ve picked up and read and I absolutely adored it! Before reading this, I was definitely interested in the cover ( as nobody can deny how beautiful it is oh my… *heart eyes* ) but after reading the synopsis I was even further intrigued. I was familiar with the contemporary and romance genres of the book but I’ve not read many new adult books so this was an exciting book for me. Also, the novel focuses on sociological issues which was something very new and foreign to me reading wise. I actually appreciated the different themes more than I expected to!

the-characters

Personally, I loved the protagonist – Lily Bloom. She was such a quirky yet classy character that I can see a lot of people relating to. I really respected her storyline and the development that can be noticed within the ‘flashbacks’ to her rough childhood through to adulthood as although some situations she was in weren’t desirable, they were most definitely interesting and made me admire her strength to be a strong person for others and herself more.

I felt that Ryle  (another main character) was quite likeable  – mostly because he’s like everyone’s dream man, especially mine oops. Who doesn’t love a dark and mysterious man who conveniently happens to be a successful neurosurgeon too?! However, if you’ve read the book, you know how his character development goes but for those who haven’t, there are situations including him that are extremely emotional and arguable. I won’t go into too much detail but in most ‘events’ that happened I could forgive him, yet there was one near the end of the book where I wish I could have just said to him, “nope nope nope, you can be as charming and beautiful as you want but what you did was not my cup of tea, sorry”. His character isn’t really ruined by his actions as I kinda expected it, but I did most definitely learn that people aren’t always what they seem.

Then onto Atlas, oh how I loved Atlas. To me, he seemed like the ‘knight in shining armor’ for the book – again, I have to restrain myself on talking about certain situations as this is a spoiler free review, but let’s just say he is the type of person you just want to be around 24/7. His character is just so comforting and lovable it’s unbelievable. Every time he appeared and was talked about I just felt so happy. Plus, I admired his and Lily’s journey over the course of the entire novel – sometimes it felt more distant that I would’ve liked but it’s definitely understandable for what had happened.

For the all characters as a whole, I especially loved the fact that there literally wasn’t a single character that seemed perfect, even the minor characters – every one had their own faults 🙂

the-storyline

I feel like the pace of the storyline/plot was perfect. Early on in the book, there was a moment where I thought, “Oh my word this is all happening too fast”, but then I thought about it more and realised if the book has slowed down even just the tiniest bit, it just wouldn’t be the same and be probably completely ruined. As now that I’ve finished the entire book, I appreciated how things moved so quickly – hard to explain but you’ll probably understand if you’ve read the book.

And, although I’ve never experienced personally or read about ‘certain topics’ that are focused on in the book, the plot definitely seemed logical. But that may depend on the reader as the themes are quite controversial. Plus, I thought I’d mention the vibe of the book as when I read a book, I usually feel one certain feeling about it overall – whether that be excited, shocked, happy, sad etc… But with this one, all I can say is that it’s nothing but emotional. I felt like I had gone on a rollercoaster in my mind – at times I felt happy and excited, then I felt pity and sadness, at some points I felt comforted and others I just didn’t know what to do with myself. Some readers strangely don’t like to feel hundreds of emotions in one book (yes I’ve actually read reviews from people who say that, whaaaat? ), but for me it’s what made me love the book so much.

Finally, the ending. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I was so so satisfied with how the story played out – I did expect it but I’m glad I did. I truly wish that this could be a series as I need more of certain relationships that evolved in the book. Again, it’s so hard not to mention characters names and events that happened between them as it’s a spoiler free review – but believe me, if it wasn’t I’d just be swooning and spilling out all my thoughts over the drama that occurred. But yes, the ending I was over the moon with!

in-conclusion

So as I mentioned, this was my first Colleen Hoover book and I can officially say it most definitely won’t be my last. The writing in this book was incredible – including the pages of letters that Lily wrote to Ellen DeGeneres. Yes, Ellen. Sounds peculiar but you’ll understand if you know the whole story aha.

Overall, it took me less than 2 days to read this book and I literally never wanted to skip any of it. Although it was a quick read for me, it was one of the most spontaneous and affecting books I’ve read. I wish I could read it all over again (unfortunately my TBR is now over 100 books so that won’t be happening for a while now oops).

If you’re thinking of picking up this book, please please do! I’d love to hear what everyone thinks of it as I feel like not everyone will feel the same way as I did about it. Therefore, I most definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a powerful, ecstatic and tear-jerking book – honestly, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

My rating:   4.5 stars out of 5

September Wrap-Up 2016

corner1

Hello everyone! I honestly can’t believe how fast the month of September went, nevertheless, I’m so excited for October! The weather is always perfect, Halloween is coming, the nights start to get darker earlier and it’s my birthday near the end of the month! I’m hoping October will be a great reading month too as I’m planning to read quite a few books 🙂

Anyway, the month of September was such a great reading month. I managed to read 7 books – more than double of how many I read in August! All the books I did read, I enjoyed a lot so I can’t wait to tell you what they were and my thoughts on each.

So here we go –

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 5 stars.

My thoughts: This was SO SO good. I read Throne Of Glass for the first time in August and I couldn’t resist continuing on with the series in September. I absolutely loved Throne of Glass, and I loved this one too ( maybe even more! ). This book was just as packed with surprises, action and that guilty pleasure love triangle. Sarah J. Maas seriously is a literature and plot genius, I can’t wait to continue with the next book soon.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

My rating: 4.5 stars

My thoughts: This was such a lovely and cute contemporary. I admit, it did take me around 70 or 80 pages to get into it but once I was fully immersed in the story, I loved it! I had heard so many good things about this book beforehand and I can definitely see why. I think it’s a great young adult contemporary/romance to read if you read that genre regularly – or if you’re just starting out on reading genres such as those, then this book is perfect for you.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

My rating: 4 stars.

My thoughts: I read the majority of this in this car taking my sister back to university and it was definitely such a different book. I knew what the plot of this book was and I could tell what the outcome of the situation was going to be yet I still thoroughly enjoyed it. However, this book was more informative and something that makes you think rather than a fluffy contemporary. It deals with such a life-changing situation from a completely different and chilling perspective, which made me appreciate those around me so much more. I don’t think anyone would want to be in Mia’s ( the protagonist’s ) place yet I’m glad I read the book as it was so incredibly moving. I’m definitely looking to pick up the sequel to this book – Where She Went, soon.

The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

My rating: 4.5 stars

My thoughts: This book was nothing like I expected, yet at the same time it was. Don’t worry, I’m just as confused as you. I heard so many things previously about this book having a Gossip Girl vibe – which I definitely felt. However, I didn’t expect the book to be so futuristic and didn’t expect what happened at the end, or should I say who had something happen to them 😉 I don’t want to mention any specifics as I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone who hasn’t read it, I was just definitely shocked as I expected it to be someone else throughout the entire book. I put up a review for this book a few weeks ago so I’ll link that here if you’re interested 🙂

Persuasion by Jane Austen

My rating: 3.5 stars.

My thoughts: Jane Austen never seems to fail me with her elegant writing, it puts me in such a trance whilst reading, taking me back to a time that I clearly wasn’t able to witness for myself. I admit, I didn’t enjoy this as much as Pride & Prejudice, and yes, I know they’re completely separate books but I just feel like nothing happened plot-wise in comparison. I did love the protagonist ( Anne ) and the expected romance, I just feel like she wasn’t involved in things as much as I would’ve liked her to be – she seemed to just stand by and either be admired or admire others. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it and I’m going to be  reading yet another one of Austen’s works during October – Northanger Abbey, for the Austentatious book club, so I’m excited to see what I think of it.

Glass-Sword-High-Res.jpg

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

My rating: 5 stars.

My thoughts: Oh my… so incredible. I have to admit, it took me 100 pages or so to fully get into this, but I think the reason of that is because I read Red Queen at the beginning of the year, and if you’ve read it you’ll know the ending is something ‘special’. So getting back into this richly descriptive world after that, was definitely a task – but ohhhh was it worth it. Victoria Aveyard is slowly but surely becoming one of my all-time favourite authors, I have no idea how she whips out these dramatic scenes and plot twists without me ever expecting it. Now, I’m preparing myself for the third book in this series to be released in February 2017 and I can already tell it will not disappoint 🙂

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

My rating: 4.5 stars

My thoughts: I was sent this book for review by a company called SocialBookCo and I’m so glad as I enjoyed and appreciated it and storyline so much. I don’t want to ramble on about the book for too long as I will be putting up a full separate review for it next week, however, this book was definitely something special. This was my first time reading a Colleen Hoover book and I’ve honestly never read anything like it or on the topic that it deals with, but I found it so moving, so heartbreaking and so informative. Again, a full review will be going up soon so I won’t go into detail as to why I loved it so much but I’ll just say that this will not be the last Colleen Hoover book I read 🙂

So there you have it – they’re all the books I read in the month of September 🙂 Personally, I think I had such a great reading month and I hope you all did too. I can’t wait to read more in October as I have some exciting books lined up.

If you’ve read any of the books mentioned, I would love to hear what you thought of them too! And if you’re planning to read any of these books, hopefully I’ve motivated you to read them sooner 🙂

Have a lovely day and thank you always for reading.
